Dr Julie Brooks, PhD, discusses the best treatment for wrinkles on the face

Wrinkles are a natural part of aging, but many people seek treatments to help reduce their appearance. There are several options available, but what is the best treatment for wrinkles on the face; anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, and high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) non-surgical facelifts?

Anti-wrinkle injections

Anti-wrinkle injections, also known as botulinum toxin or the brand name Botox®, work by temporarily relaxing the facial muscles that cause wrinkles. The injections are usually administered in the forehead, around the eyes, and between the eyebrows, and can last 3-6 months. Anti-wrinkle injections are a popular option because they are minimally invasive and have few side effects. It is important that the toxin is administered by a skilled practitioner to minimise risks of asymmetry by under/over-treating certain muscles. Under/over-treating areas could lead to abnormal lifting (Spock eyes) or drooping (ptosis), which are not desirable for anyone. An important point to remember is that botulinum toxin is a poison and must be handled with care. For this reason, botulinum toxin for injection can only be purchased by a qualified medical prescriber.  Anti-wrinkle injections are best to treat superficial wrinkles that are not too deep.

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are another option for treating wrinkles. Unlike anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers add volume to the skin, filling in wrinkles and restoring a more youthful appearance. Dermal fillers consist of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring component of soft tissues in the body. Although dermal filler products are safe, if not administered correctly, complications can quickly arise. It is not uncommon to block arteries in the face with fillers, and if not dealt with swiftly the blockage could lead to necrosis and other complications. Another undesirable effect of badly administrated fillers is overfilling. Although some people desire to have huge lips and cheeks, it is not good ethical practice. Overfilling the face can lead to asymmetry, and a bumpy, abnormal appearance. Dermal fillers should be administered by a qualified and experienced practitioner to minimise complications, should they arise, and achieve a more natural appearance. Dermal fillers tend to last 6-24 months depending on the brand and type of filler used.

HIFU non-surgical facelift

HIFU non-surgical facelift is a non-invasive procedure that uses ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen production and tighten skin. HIFU non-surgical facelift is typically used to treat wrinkles and sagging skin on the face and neck. The procedure does not require needles or incisions into the skin; therefore, risks are minimal and no downtime is required. The tone and texture of the skin also improve dramatically with a HIFU non-surgical facelift, giving clients a more radiant and youthful appearance. The results’ longevity varies for each person, but on average results can last 18 months or longer.

So, which is the best treatment for wrinkles?

The best option for treating wrinkles will vary depending on the individual's specific needs and concerns. Anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers are good options for people who are looking for a minimally invasive procedure with quick results. HIFU non-surgical facelift is a good option for people looking for a non-invasive procedure with long-lasting natural results and improved skin tone and texture.

You can have all 3 treatments

In conclusion, anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, and HIFU non-surgical facelifts are all great treatments for wrinkles. The best option will depend on the individual's specific needs and concerns, and a professional consultation with a skilled practitioner is recommended to determine the best treatment plan. It may be that combinations of anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, and a HIFU non-surgical facelift are the best approach.
