Dr Julie Brooks, PhD, gives her top 5 tips for getting the body you've always dreamed of, and its not what you expect!
Do not go on a diet!
Going on a diet is probably the worst thing you can do. Why? Because the likelihood of you sticking to it for the rest of your life is slim to none. Diets are suitable for short-term weight loss, such as for weddings or holidays. But as soon as you stop the diet, you will put the weight back on and some more. Educating yourself on foods and gut microbes is the best way to lose and maintain a healthy weight. Don't just learn about healthy foods; learn about bad foods (high-fat, salt and sugar) too. The more you know what's in something and how it affects your body, the less likely you will eat it.
2. Enter a sporting event.
For some people, exercise does not come easy, but just getting out every day for a walk will have huge benefits for your body and mental health. If I say to myself, I'm going to exercise every day to get “beach body ready”, I never reach my goal. I find it best when I set myself a sporting challenge, such as; running the Manchester 10K, the Great North Swim or an organised charity hike in the countryside. That way, the goal is not to get fit; the goal is to finish the event (and it doesn’t matter how long it takes). Now that the goal is different, there is no pressure to get “beach body ready”. All your focus will be on training to finish the dam thing, and guess what? You will lose weight and get that beach body as an outcome of the new goal. So, you get to personally achieve something and get a super fit body at the same time, bonus!
3. Go to bed early.
Nevermind Netflix and Chill; read a book and go to sleep. Studies have shown that only 15% of people get a good night’s sleep. Sleep is vital for the body and the brain to repair itself, yet so many of us deprive ourselves of it. A good night’s sleep will have you waking up in a better mood and give you more energy for exercise and everyday tasks. It will also make you less likely to relapse into bad habits (junk foods, alcohol etc.) and keep you alert and focused for the rest of the day. Try meditation to calm the mind if you have trouble getting or staying asleep. It is also a good idea not to use your phone or electronics in bed. Have your bedroom as a sanctuary that you go into to heal yourself.
4. Work on your self-esteem and confidence
Why do so many people find it hard to discipline themselves to get the body they've always dreamed of? Usually, it's because they have low self-esteem. If you loved yourself and viewed your body as a temple, you would not find it hard to do the 3 steps above. Yet so many of us lack motivation to do so. I found that watching YouTube videos and attending online seminars really helped me. One of the best ways to understand how our minds work is to read the book The Chimp Paradox by Steve Peters. This book profoundly affected my life, and I am sure it will work for you too. I also recommend listening to podcasts on Jay Shetty, Tony Robbins, Mel Robbins and The Diary of a CEO with Steven Bartlett.
5. Make yourself a priority.
It is essential to take some time for yourself to re-calibrate. We do so much for others, whether its at work or running around for the kids/pets. But by putting everyone else first, we neglect ourselves. A small way to make yourself a priority is to treat yourself once in a while. This doesn't have to mean anything significant, like buying yourself a new car. It could mean treating yourself to a new outfit for a special occasion or getting something done to make you feel more body confident, such as Body Sculpt.
